Coreslab Structures (Ariz) Inc. has recently been acknowledged for our contribution to the ASU - Interdisciplinary Science & Technology Building One project located in Tempe, Arizona.
During the pre-construction phase of the project, Gilbane Building Company, the CM at Risk credited Coreslab as being largely responsible for making the project a reality. There was a budget crisis and through value engineering, Coreslab helped save the project just over $1,000,000 by working with the Architect and Engineer to change an architectural cast-in-place concrete mass wall to a precast mass wall. In addition, the mass wall had to be designed to include one of the building's key architectural features, a cantilevered end to the building, which utilized horizontally stacked precast wall panels "stitched together" structurally, to complete the framed tube section.
Another unique aspect of the precast solution was that it had to be "dumbed-down" finish wise, to match the rest of the cast-in-place concrete on the building.
The completed project has been recognized as Arizona Best of 2006 by the Southwest Contractor Magazine. The building's sustainable design goal was always to achieve LEED-silver certification.
