The UNO Strauss Performing Arts Canopy project in Omaha, NE was recently completed by Coreslab Structures (Omaha) in 2021. The project included the addition and renovation of the Strauss Performing Arts Center at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Coreslab Structures was tasked with improving the look of the main entrance, originally built in 1973.
The project included eight new concrete benches that were placed near the main entrance, as well as a cantilevered canopy supported by four aesthetically pleasing columns. The columns were sandblasted to match the building’s existing cast-in-place grey concrete exterior finish. Particular consideration was needed structurally because the canopy panels were bearing on the existing building.
Coreslab Structures was able to provide a high quality Total Precast design with 4 Columns, 4 Roof Canopy Pieces, and 8 Benches.
The canopy was designed to match the existing CIP with a gray concrete sandblast to match the building’s exterior. Special structural considerations were taken to ensure the canopy was safely and securely in place. The UNO Strauss Performing Arts Canopy project was a challenging structural design that was completed with precision by Coreslab Structures (Omaha) Inc.
The UNO Strauss Performing Arts Canopy project exemplifies the many benefits of precast construction. Precast can provide a high quality, cost-effective solution to complex projects like this one. The precast columns and canopy pieces were able to be sandblasted to match the existing cast-in-place grey concrete exterior finish, providing a seamless integration with the building. In addition, the precast pieces were designed to ensure the canopy was safely and securely in place with special structural considerations taken into account.
Precast concrete also allowed for a faster build time, resulting in an on time and on budget completion of the project. Precast concrete is durable and low maintenance, meaning the Strauss Performing Arts Canopy will look great for years to come. When you need to complete a complicated project, precast construction is the way to go.
